Orthodontics

As a teenager, it can be challenging to feel confident and self-assured. Your body is changing, and you’re navigating a whole new set of social and emotional challenges. One of the most significant self-esteem boosters is a great smile, and that’s where orthodontic treatment plays a significant role.

The Importance of Orthodontic Treatment for Teens

There are several reasons why teens may need orthodontic treatment. The first is that misaligned teeth can cause several oral health problems. For example, crooked teeth can make it difficult to brush and floss properly, which can lead to tooth decay, and gum disease and an unpleasant breath. Misaligned teeth can also cause uneven wear on the teeth, which can lead to tooth sensitivity and even tooth loss.

Another reason why orthodontic treatment is crucial early on is that crooked teeth can cause problems with speaking and eating. Teens with misaligned teeth may have difficulty speaking clearly, affecting their communication and social interactions.

The Best Time to Have Orthodontic Treatment

By the age of 12, most, if not all, of the permanent teeth except wisdom teeth, should have erupted for teens. This makes it the ideal age for receiving orthodontic treatment between 11 and 15. At this age, we can assess for gaps, overlaps and other dental issues that may require treatment.

Many teens will have some form of orthodontic treatment at this age, making them more likely to get treatment if they see their friends wearing braces or aligners. In addition, the growth spurt can help shorten treatment time.

Types of Orthodontic Treatment for Teens

There are different types of orthodontic treatments that can be used to correct misaligned teeth and bites in teens. The most common are traditional metal braces, which make use of metal brackets and wires connected to the front of the teeth to gradually move the teeth into the correct position. An alternative treatment option is clear braces, which offer a more subtle appearance for teens who feel self-conscious about wearing metal braces.

Clear aligners are another increasingly popular alternative for teens. These are clear, removable plastic trays over the teeth. They’re made of a transparent, plastic material that is almost invisible when worn and are custom-made to fit your teeth. You change these out every 7-14 days to slowly move the teeth into their proper position.

Our orthodontic treatment for teens can help them achieve straight, beautiful smiles that allow them to thrive while navigating the challenges of adolescence with ease.
