Braces (Fixed Orthodontic Appliances)

Orthodontic braces are a popular and effective way to straighten and align teeth. They function by applying gentle pressure to the teeth over time, gradually moving them into the desired position.

We are proud to offer our patients the latest orthodontic technologies and methods. Braces have come a long way since their creation, and we currently offer more comfortable options and varieties to choose from.

Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces consist of a metal framework of wires and brackets, as well as ligatures attached to the teeth and adjusted over time to correct misalignment. These are the most common type of braces used, but they are also the most visible.

The brackets are placed on the front of the individual teeth, and the archwire is threaded through them. Elastomeric ligatures are added over the brackets to keep the archwires in place and add a pop of colour. It’s for this reason that metal braces are so popular with children. There’s nothing more exciting than switching the colour of your elastomeric ligatures during each visit!

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic or clear braces are similar to metal braces, but use clear or tooth-coloured materials instead to make them less noticeable. The brackets and wires are made of a ceramic material that blends in with the teeth, making them an excellent option for patients who want a more discreet look. We typically recommend ceramic braces for our older patients as they offer a subtle appearance and require more maintenance.

Each type of braces has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. After a thorough consultation, we provide you with all the different treatment options, based on your specific needs and goals.

The Orthodontic Process

Receiving orthodontic braces involves several steps and processes but will be well worth the effort. If you are interested in receiving braces, we will begin with a consultation to examine your teeth and jaw and discuss your overall concerns.

If you are a candidate for braces, we will digitally scan your teeth, take X-rays of your jaw and complete dental photography to develop a tailored treatment plan. This plan will outline your treatment, each appointment, progress points and the final desired result.

To place the braces, one of our experienced oral hygienists will prepare the surfaces of the teeth and the Orthodontist places a bracket on each tooth. Next, we place the wire through the brackets and place the elastomeric ligatures.

Follow-up appointments are required every few weeks to adjust the wire and replace the elastomeric ligatures. If you opt for metal braces, you can choose our exciting colours for your braces with each appointment.
